married my high school sweetheart. But on our first wedding anniversary, I heard him on the phone: “I’ve been stringing her along since high school. Tonight, I’m finally going to make it happen.” I spent fifteen years with my high school sweetheart before he finally proposed. Every Valentine’s Day, every birthday, and every Christmas, I would watch his hands, hoping for a box that never appeared. When I gently broached the subject, Aaron would smile tenderly and repeat, “Honey, a ring isn’t the most important thing. I’m saving up. I want to do things right. I want to give you everything.” Meanwhile, my friends were getting married, my younger cousin was getting married too. At Thanksgiving, my mother-in-law even announced in front of everyone that I was “the girlfriend who just couldn’t seal the deal.” I kept believing. I’d loved Aaron since I was sixteen, ever since we talked about our future on the swing on my grandmother’s porch. When the proposal finally came last year, I was in tears, convinced I’d landed the chance of a lifetime. In my mind, all the excuses and waiting had been worth it. Last Friday was our first engagement anniversary. He prepared dinner, lit candles, and kissed me on the forehead before saying he was going “to the bedroom to change into a suit” and suggested I pour the wine. Barefoot and happy, I was walking into the hallway when I suddenly heard his voice through the half-open door. A deep, wary voice, different from the one he used with me. “Yeah, man… I’ve been feeding her all sorts of lies SINCE SCHOOL. She has no idea. Tonight, I’m finally going to put my plan into action.” My legs went weak. Deep down, he was right. I really didn’t know anything. What he was planning. How he was going to surprise me. Why he had continued to PRETENDE TO LOVE ME all this time. But I had to understand. So I carried on as if nothing had happened. After wiping my face, I went back to the kitchen and smiled as I saw him leave. He was looking at me, mysterious, with something hidden behind his back. That’s when a car pulled up in front of our house and there was a knock at the door. “Well, well,” said Aaron. “You really thought I was with you OUT OF LOVE?” Someone then came through the door. 👇The full story continues in the FIRST comment below!
