I Bought an Old Book at a Yard Sale — Then I Found a Note Hidden Inside

I wasn’t planning to buy anything that morning.

I had stopped at a small neighborhood yard sale while driving home. There were old dishes, children’s toys, clothes, and several boxes filled with books.

I usually don’t pay much attention to old books, but one particular hardcover caught my eye.

It was worn and dusty, with a dark brown cover and no picture on the front.

I picked it up and opened it.

There was a handwritten name inside the cover, followed by a date from decades ago.

For some reason, I couldn’t put it down.

I paid a few dollars for it and took it home.

That evening, I was sitting on the couch when a small piece of folded paper slipped from between the pages.

I assumed it was an old receipt.

I unfolded it.

There were only a few handwritten words:

“If you found this book, don’t open the envelope.”

I actually smiled.

It seemed like something someone had written as a joke.

Then I turned the next few pages.

That’s when I noticed a thin envelope tucked inside the back of the book.

My first thought was to leave it alone.

Of course, I didn’t.

I carefully opened it.

Inside was an old black-and-white photograph.

It showed a family standing in front of a small house.

There were two adults and three children.

On the back of the photograph was a handwritten date:

July 14, 1968.

Underneath it was another sentence:

“This was the last day we were all together.”

I stared at that sentence for a long time.

Who were these people?

Why had the photograph been hidden inside the book?

And why would someone specifically write a warning telling whoever found it not to open the envelope?

I decided to search the name I’d found inside the book.

After a few minutes, I found an old newspaper archive mentioning a family with the same last name.

The article was from the late 1960s.

I won’t lie—I felt a strange chill when I realized the family had lived in the same town where I’d bought the book.

The next day, curiosity got the better of me.

I drove around the neighborhood mentioned in the article.

Eventually, I found an old house that looked surprisingly similar to the one in the photograph.

The porch was different, and the paint had obviously been replaced, but the shape of the house was almost identical.

There was even a large tree beside the driveway.

I stood across the street looking at it for several minutes.

Then I noticed something else.

The tree in the photograph was still there.

It was much larger now, but the shape of the branches was unmistakable.

I went home that afternoon and took the photograph out again.

For the first time, I noticed something in the background I’d completely missed before.

There was a small object sitting on the porch behind the family.

I zoomed in on a scanned copy of the photograph.

It looked like a little wooden box.

I couldn’t explain why, but that detail bothered me.

I searched through the newspaper archive again.

Eventually, I found another article about the family.

It explained that shortly after the date written on the photograph, one member of the family had disappeared from the town.

There wasn’t much information.

Just a short article.

No dramatic explanation.

No clear answer.

That almost made it more disturbing.

I went back to the book.

I looked at the handwritten warning again.

“If you found this book, don’t open the envelope.”

For the first time, I wondered whether the person who wrote those words knew exactly what was inside.

I still have the book.

I still have the photograph.

And I still don’t know why they ended up together.

Maybe there is a completely ordinary explanation.

Maybe someone simply forgot the photograph inside an old book.

Maybe the note was written as a joke.

But every once in a while, I look at that photograph again and think about the sentence written on the back:

“This was the last day we were all together.”

And I can’t help wondering what happened the day after that photograph was taken.

Some stories end with an answer.

This one doesn’t.
